Air pollution is the biggest environmental risk to health in Europe. The European Environment Agency (EEA) estimates that more than 400.000 premature deaths occur each year in Europe due to air pollution. Heart disease and stroke are the most common reasons for premature deaths attributable to air pollution, followed by lung diseases and lung cancer. Air pollution is also associated with a broad range of further effects such as reduced lung function, asthma, impacts on fertility, pregnancy, newborns and children (Source: EEA, 2020).
